Every year my mom and I say we are going to make a summer day trip somewhere “different” but never do. Work weeks are hectic and the weekends are filled with competing priorities. But we finally made the decision to just do it and head to Ogunquit, Maine. Let me tell you, I am so glad we did! The day was the perfect Ogunquit summer Friday!
High Tide & cramped Beachgoers
We left early in the morning and the drive took less than 2 hours. Our first stop was the beach and as you can tell from previous posts, it’s one of my happy places. But the tide was coming in so we only stayed for a few minutes because it was so high there was barely any room to move! Beachgoers were literally on top of each other! Instead, my mom and I decided to take a walk to Perkins Cove and reminisce about the vacations we used to take to Ogunquit years ago as a family. We walked past the hotels we stayed in and chatted about “Dolly The Trolley” that travels around town.
Hallmark Channel Vibes
The weather was absolutely perfect. Bright blue skies with a great breeze to allow relief from the August sun. Ogunquit has a small town feel with tree lined streets and beautifully manicured lawns and flower beds. The main road is lined with various motels and bed and breakfasts sitting on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The calm harbor in Perkins Cove is dotted with fishing boats and sailing excursions. The atmosphere really makes you think you’re in a Hallmark Channel movie.
Former President George Bush SR.
While waiting for the trolley to the beach we noticed a group of people gathering around the dock looking at someone. After a few minutes we found out it was former President George Bush Sr! Apparently he lives in Kennebunkport, which is a neighboring town, and comes to Perkins Cove via boat for lunch at Barnacle Billy’s. He came up right past us in a wheelchair and waved to my mom. She was so excited! I joked that she reminded me of a teenager seeing One Direction. 😉 I snagged a photo, not the best but it is still pretty cool!
Low Tide Means Beach Time
After stopping in a few shops and grabbing lunch, we headed back to the beach. The tide was finally going out and the beach was massive! It felt like the smooth sand stretched for miles. This beach would be perfect for children – so much space to run around and there are tons of little wading pools to play in. After reading a few pages of my book, I looked up to see a huge purple octopus! No… not a real one, but a massive kite! A group of people were flying a bunch of kites including a penguin and lobster. It was so cool, great end to the day!
The day was the perfect Ogunquit summer Friday, exactly what a day off from work should be like! My mom and I had so much fun together – great mother-daughter time.
